LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS

LNG is natural gas that has been cooled down to -162 °C to transform it into a liquid, making it easier and safer to transport. It has been created by the breakdown of organic matter over millions of years. Natural gas is primarily methane and, when it is burned, it releases mainly water vapor and CO2. With emissions at 30-50 % less than from other combustible sources, natural gas is regarded as the cleanest of the fossil fuels.

Facts and Figures about LNG

MAIN PIPELINE AND LNG FLOWS (2018)

Source: McKinsey, Energy Insights, Global Gas & LNG Outlook to 2035

Natural gas fields are often located in remote areas – onshore or offshore – far from where the gas is needed. Liquefying reduces the gas to 600th of its original volume so that it can more easily be delivered to markets via special ocean-going tankers. It is then regasified at import terminals and dispersed through pipelines to industrial, commercial and residential customers. The need for cleaner air is driving demand for LNG. Over the last two years, China has doubled its LNG imports and is now the world’s largest gas importer.
